When Reflection Finds a Home
Some reflections stay with us until they find somewhere to belong. 🌿💛
Recently, I noticed something interesting about my writing.
Once I have written about an experience, I seem able to let it go.
Not because I have solved it.
Not because I have fully understood it.
Simply because it no longer needs to keep asking for my attention.
A reflection may stay with me for hours or days.
It occupies space in my mind.
I turn it over.
Question it.
Sit with it.
Notice it appearing in different places.
A conversation.
A dream.
A disagreement.
A moment with my children.
A passing thought while walking.
Something keeps returning until I finally stop and listen.
Then something shifts.
I write.
Not to explain the experience away.
Not even to fully understand it.
Simply to give it a home.
And once it has found that home, something settles.
The reflection no longer needs to live inside me in the same way.
My attention is no longer being pulled towards it.
My energy becomes available again.
Not because the experience has disappeared.
Because it has been acknowledged.
Honoured.
Given form.
I am beginning to wonder whether writing is not merely an act of expression.
Perhaps it is also an act of completion.
A way of saying:
I've listened.
I've stayed with this.
I've learned what I can for now.
You can rest.
Recently, I wrote about attention and energy.
I reflected on how unfinished conversations, tensions and thoughts can continue living in our minds long after the event itself has passed.
Writing seems to do something different.
It takes something that is circling internally and places it somewhere outside of me.
Once written, the reflection becomes part of my story rather than something that continues demanding my attention.
Perhaps that is why I enjoy writing so much.
Not because I have answers.
Not because I have solved life's questions.
But because writing allows me to participate more fully in my own experience.
A thought becomes a reflection.
A reflection becomes language.
Language becomes meaning.
And meaning creates space.
Looking back, I can see that many of my recent articles have followed this pattern.
A dream.
A conversation.
A difficult interaction.
A moment of awareness.
An observation about the body.
An insight about boundaries.
A question about attention.
Each one stayed with me until it found its way onto the page.
And each time I noticed the same thing.
Once written, I felt lighter.
More spacious.
More available to whatever life was bringing next.
The more I reflect on this, the less I see writing as a way of producing something and the more I experience it as a way of integrating something.
Life happens.
An experience touches us.
A question emerges.
The reflection searches for its shape.
And eventually it finds it in words.
Once that happens, the experience becomes part of the story rather than something I need to keep carrying.
Perhaps writing is how I digest life.
Not by analysing it endlessly.
But by sitting with it long enough for meaning to emerge.
The reflection is no longer circling.
The experience is no longer demanding attention.
It has found a place to belong.
Perhaps that is why certain reflections keep returning until they are written.
Not because they want to be understood.
Because they want to be heard.
And perhaps writing is simply the moment when reflection finally finds a home.
